Brewster Kahle is an American digital librarian, computer engineer and internet entrepreneur, born October 21, 1960, in New York City. He developed WAIS (Wide Area Information Server), an early internet distributed search and document retrieval system, and co-founded WAIS, Inc., sold to AOL in 1995. He co-founded Alexa Internet in 1996, sold to Amazon in 1999, and founded the Internet Archive, which he continues to direct; he implemented the Archive's Wayback Machine in 2001 to give public access to archived web content. Kahle earned a Bachelor of Science in computer science and engineering from MIT in 1982, studying artificial intelligence under Marvin Minsky and W. Daniel Hillis. He was inducted into the Internet Hall of Fame in 2012 and elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 2010.
