Computer Systems Organization

Robotics is the interdisciplinary field of engineering and computer science concerned with designing, constructing, operating and using robots. It combines mechanical engineering, electrical circuits, power systems and software to build machines that assist humans across agriculture, manufacturing, medicine, space exploration and other domains. Facts
Origin Year
1961 1
Isaac Asimov coined the word robotics in his 1941 short story Liar!, but the field as an engineering discipline dates its practical origin to 1961, when Unimate, the first industrial robot, began operating on a General Motors production line.
Core Concern
Designing autonomous or remotely operated machines that perform physical tasks with minimal human intervention, spanning mechanical, electrical and software engineering. 1

  • Design section
Robotics usually combines four aspects of design work: a power source (e.g. a battery), mechanical construction, a control system (electrical circuits), and software
  • Lead paragraph
Robotics is the interdisciplinary study and practice of the design, construction, operation, and use of robots.
  • History section
Much of the research in robotics focuses not on specific industrial tasks, but on investigations into new types of robots, alternative ways to think about or design robots, and new ways to manufacture them.
  • Associated With: Artificial Intelligence, Lead section
Robotic programs can be run by remote control, artificial intelligence (AI), or a hybrid of the two.
  • Associated With: Computer Vision, Lead section
Pattern recognition and computer vision can be used to track objects.
