Human-Robot Interaction

Human-Centered Computing

Human-robot interaction (HRI) is the study of interactions between humans and robots. It is a multidisciplinary field with contributions from human-computer interaction, artificial intelligence, robotics, natural language processing, design, psychology and philosophy. A subfield known as physical human-robot interaction has tended to focus on device design to enable people to safely interact with robotic systems.

Origin Year
1941 1
Marks Asimov's 1941 fictional articulation of the human-safety problem (the Three Laws of Robotics); this predates HRI as an academic discipline.
Core Concern
How humans and robots interact safely and effectively, spanning robot design, communication and shared workspaces. 1
