Friedrich L. Bauer was a German computer scientist who was a co-developer of the ALGOL programming language and is credited with introducing the stack, or last-in-first-out, principle into computer science for managing subroutine calls and expression evaluation. Bauer is also widely credited with proposing the term software engineering at a 1968 NATO conference convened to address what participants called the software crisis, the growing difficulty of building large, reliable software systems.

How did Friedrich Bauer define software engineering?
His 1972 definition was the use of sound engineering principles to economically obtain reliable software that works efficiently on real machines.
In 1972 Bauer published a definition of software engineering as the establishment and use of sound engineering principles to economically obtain software that is reliable and works on real machines efficiently. He had suggested the term itself as a way to conceive of both the problem and the solution when NATO was discussing the software crisis.
