Aggelos Kiayias is a Greek cryptographer and computer scientist who holds the Chair in Cyber Security and Privacy at the University of Edinburgh, where he directs the Blockchain Technology Laboratory, and serves as chief science officer at Input Output Global (formerly IOHK). He earned his PhD in 2002 at the City University of New York under advisors Moti Yung and Stathis Zachos, and his research spans cryptocurrency design, group signatures, traitor tracing, anonymity, key generation and cryptographic voting systems; he developed the Cardano blockchain platform and its Ouroboros proof-of-stake protocol. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 2021, awarded the BCS Lovelace Medal in 2024 for contributions to cyber security and cryptography theory and practice, and named a 2025 ACM Fellow and a 2026 IACR Fellow.
