Alain Colmerauer was a French computer scientist who, with Philippe Roussel, created the Prolog programming language at Aix-Marseille University, growing out of an earlier 1970 to 1971 project to process natural-language French text. A preliminary version of Prolog emerged at the end of 1971 and a more definitive version at the end of 1972. Colmerauer became a full professor at Aix-Marseille University in 1979 and later helped found the field of constraint logic programming with Prolog III in 1984, work recognized in 1997 when the Association for Logic Programming named him a Founder of Logic Programming.

Colmerauer spent 1967-1970 as assistant professor at the University of Montreal, where he created Q-Systems, one of the earliest linguistic formalisms used in the development of the TAUM-METEO machine translation prototype. Developing Prolog III in 1984, he was one of the main founders of the field of constraint logic programming.
