David Deutsch is a British physicist at the University of Oxford often described as the father of quantum computing. His 1985 paper formulated a description of a quantum Turing machine, a direct generalization of the classical Turing machine to quantum mechanics, and specified an algorithm designed to run on it, one of the first quantum algorithms. His 2008 nomination for Fellowship of the Royal Society credited him with laying the foundations of the quantum theory of computation and participating in many of the field's most important subsequent advances, including quantum logic gates, quantum computational networks, and the first quantum error-correction scheme.
