Gaetano Borriello

Gaetano Borriello (1958 to February 1, 2015) was an Italian computer scientist and researcher in ubiquitous computing, known for starting the Open Data Kit project and as the founding director of Intel Research Seattle. He led the Place Lab project at Intel Research, which used Wi-Fi to enhance location sensing and became the dominant approach later used by Apple, Google, Microsoft and others. He was named a Fellow of the ACM in 2009 for the design, realization and integration of embedded and ubiquitous computing systems, and a Fellow of the IEEE in 2010, and served on the University of Washington computer science faculty from 1988 until his death.
