Insup Lee is an American computer scientist known for research on real-time computing and cyber-physical systems. He earned a BS in mathematics from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1977 and an MS and PhD in computer science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1983, joining the University of Pennsylvania as an assistant professor that same year and remaining there throughout his career. He holds the Cecilia Fitler Moore professorship in Penn's Department of Computer and Information Science and directs its PRECISE Center, with research spanning cyber-physical systems, real-time computing, high-confidence medical devices, formal methods and run-time verification, and more recent work on the security of networked medical devices. He was elected a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers in 2001, of the Association for Computing Machinery in 2017, and of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 2022, and received the IEEE Technical Committee on Cyber-Physical Systems Distinguished Leadership Award in 2023 and the inaugural ACM SIGBED Distinguished Leadership Award in 2022.
