Jeffrey Snover is a software architect best known as the inventor and chief architect of PowerShell, the object-based command line shell and scripting language that Microsoft built for system administration and automation. He studied physics at the University of New Hampshire from 1978 to 1982 without taking a degree, then worked as an architect and development manager for Tivoli NetView at Tivoli Software, part of IBM, and as a consulting engineer and development manager at Digital Equipment Corporation, where he led network and systems management projects. He joined Microsoft in 1999 as divisional architect for its Management and Services Division and became chief architect of the Microsoft Management Console. PowerShell began in early 2003 under the codename Monad, built on the idea of the Bourne shell but passing .NET objects through the pipeline instead of text streams, and its first prototype was written in C#. The idea met strong resistance inside the company, and version 1.0 was completed in November 2006. Snover was promoted to Technical Fellow in 2015, left Microsoft in 2022 to join Google as a Distinguished Engineer, and retired from Google in January 2026.
