Kevin Ashton is a British technology pioneer who coined the term the Internet of Things around 1999 to describe a future system connecting the internet to physical objects through sensors, radio frequency identification tags and networked devices. He cofounded the Auto-ID Center at MIT, which developed global standards for RFID and related sensor technologies that helped make that vision practical, and the phrase he coined has since become the standard name for the field of network connected physical devices.
