Kunihiko Fukushima is a Japanese computer scientist known for his work on artificial neural networks, most notably the neocognitron, published in 1980, a hierarchical, self organizing neural network for visual pattern recognition that is now recognized as the original deep convolutional neural network architecture and a direct ancestor of the convolutional networks used throughout modern computer vision. Fukushima had earlier, in 1969, introduced an activation function for hierarchical visual feature extraction later widely adopted in deep learning as the rectified linear unit.
