Maurice Herlihy

Maurice Peter Herlihy (born January 1, 1954) is an American computer scientist and the An Wang Professor of Computer Science at Brown University, where he has taught since 1994, specializing in multiprocessor synchronization. His research established theoretical foundations for wait-free synchronization and linearizable data structures, applied combinatorial topology to distributed computing, and advanced both hardware and software transactional memory. He received the Godel Prize in 2004, the Dijkstra Prize three times, in 2003, 2012 and 2022, and was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 2013 for concurrent computing techniques in linearizability, non-blocking data structures and transactional memory.
