Morris Chang is a Taiwanese business executive and electrical engineer, born July 10, 1931, in Ningbo, China, who founded Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) in 1987, establishing the world's first dedicated semiconductor foundry and pioneering the foundry model of chip fabrication that separated chip design from manufacturing. He served as TSMC's CEO from 1987 to 2005 and chairman until 2018. Before founding TSMC he worked at Sylvania Electric Products and then Texas Instruments from 1958 to 1983, rising to group vice president, and served as president and chief operating officer of General Instrument before heading Taiwan's Industrial Technology Research Institute. Chang earned a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in mechanical engineering from MIT in 1952 and 1953, and a PhD in electrical engineering from Stanford University in 1964. He received the IEEE Robert N. Noyce Medal in 2000 and the IEEE Medal of Honor in 2011.
