Ole-Johan Dahl was a Norwegian computer scientist who, together with Kristen Nygaard at the Norwegian Computing Center in Oslo, created the Simula programming language in the 1960s. Simula introduced the concepts of classes and objects, and it is widely regarded as the first object-oriented programming language, directly shaping later languages including Smalltalk, C++ and Java. Dahl and Nygaard shared the 2001 Turing Award and the IEEE John von Neumann Medal for this work.
