Ralph E. Griswold (May 19, 1934 - October 4, 2006) was a computer scientist known for his research into high-level programming languages and symbolic computation, with language credits including SNOBOL, SL5, and Icon. He worked at Bell Labs from 1962, becoming head of its Programming Research and Development department in 1967, then in 1971 became the University of Arizona's first professor of computer science, where he developed Icon.
