Sidney Broadhurst was an engineer at the Post Office Research Station at Dollis Hill who assisted Tommy Flowers, together with colleague William Chandler, in designing the electronics of Colossus, the machine built during the Second World War to help decode encrypted German Lorenz cipher traffic. Broadhurst's particular expertise was in electro-mechanical circuits, complementing Flowers and Chandler's grounding in electronics. After the war he led the team that built the first ERNIE, the machine descended from Colossus engineering used to generate Britain's Premium Bond numbers.
