Sophia Ananiadou

Sophia Ananiadou is a Greek British computer scientist and computational linguist born in Athens in 1957, a professor of computer science at the University of Manchester and director of the National Centre for Text Mining in the United Kingdom. Her research addresses natural language processing and text mining, particularly the mining of biomedical literature for knowledge discovery and semantic search, building on degrees from the University of Athens and the University of Paris VII and Paris IV before a doctorate in computational linguistics from the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology in 1988. Her honors include the Daiwa Adrian Prize, multiple IBM UIMA Innovation Awards, an honorary doctorate from the University of the Aegean, a fellowship at the Alan Turing Institute, and fellowship of the ELLIS Society.
