William Chandler was an engineer at the Post Office Research Station at Dollis Hill who, together with colleague Sidney Broadhurst, assisted Tommy Flowers in designing the electronics of Colossus, the machine built during the Second World War to help decode encrypted German Lorenz cipher traffic. Chandler and Flowers brought expertise in electronic valve circuits that let them translate the concepts of earlier relay-based codebreaking machines into a far faster electronic design.
