ALGOL 58

Procedural Language

ALGOL 58, originally named IAL for International Algebraic Language, is the earliest member of the ALGOL family of programming languages, designed at a joint meeting of the Association for Computing Machinery and the German Society of Applied Mathematics and Mechanics held at ETH Zurich from May 27 to June 2, 1958. Per John Backus, the conference had two goals: providing a means of communicating numerical methods and procedures between people, and providing a means of realizing a stated process on a variety of machines. ALGOL 58 introduced the compound statement, though at this stage the feature was limited to control flow and lacked the scope-binding behavior ALGOL 60 later added. It saw limited direct implementation but became the foundation for languages including JOVIAL, MAD and NELIAC, and it was quickly superseded by ALGOL 60.

Follows Typing Discipline

Entity-backed identity for the typing discipline value this language already carries as an enum fact, resolved to a concept entity by an explicit value-to-entity map (phase 3 bucket conversion, docs\design_entity_backed_browse_buckets_20260928.md). The enum fact itself stays on the entity unchanged.
