XQuery is a query and functional programming language that queries and transforms collections of structured and unstructured data, usually in the form of XML, text and with vendor-specific extensions for other data formats such as JSON. It is a World Wide Web Consortium recommended language, semantically similar to XSLT, and designed to be broadly applicable across many types of XML data sources, including structured and semi-structured documents and databases.

How is XQuery related to XPath and XSLT?
XPath is a subset of XQuery and its development is coordinated with XSLT.
XQuery is developed by the XML Query working group of the W3C. Its work is closely coordinated with the development of XSLT by the XSL Working Group, and the two groups share responsibility for XPath, which is a subset of XQuery.
