Fuchsia (operating system)

Operating System

Fuchsia is an open source, capability based operating system developed by Google and built on a custom kernel named Zircon rather than the Linux kernel used for ChromeOS and Android. It first appeared publicly as a Google hosted Git repository in August 2016 with no official announcement, and its official product launch came in 2021 on the first generation Google Nest Hub, where it replaced the Linux based Cast OS that device had originally run. FAQs

Is Fuchsia actually running on any consumer devices?

Yes, on Google Nest Hub smart displays since 2021.

Yes. Google employees confirmed in May 2021 that Fuchsia had been deployed in the consumer market for the first time, in a software update to the first-generation Google Nest Hub that replaced its existing Chromecast-based software. That update brought no user-facing changes, and it reached all Nest Hub devices in August 2021. In May 2023 Google began rolling out a Fuchsia-based update to the second-generation Google Nest Hub.
