Kubernetes, often abbreviated K8s, is an open-source system for automating the deployment, scaling and management of containerized applications, originally designed at Google and released in 2014 before Google donated it to the newly formed Cloud Native Computing Foundation. It draws on Google's internal Borg and Omega cluster-management systems, and it groups an application's containers into logical units called pods that it schedules across a cluster of machines while continually working to match the cluster's actual state to a declared desired state. Kubernetes became the dominant container orchestration system, and a large ecosystem of tools now builds on its API.
