MSX-DOS

MSX-DOS is a discontinued disk operating system that Microsoft's Japan subsidiary built for the MSX standard of 8-bit home computers, released in 1984 with ASCII Corporation helping standardize the hardware and software around it. It combined elements of MS-DOS 1.25 and CP/M-80 2.2 and was binary compatible with CP/M-80, letting MSX owners run its large existing software library cheaply. The system used a monolithic kernel with COMMAND.COM as its command line interface, and its main purpose was to give MSX's BASIC environment real disk capability at lower cost than memory cartridges and with far more storage than cassette tape. It is no longer maintained but is remembered as a bridge between CP/M software and the MS-DOS world on 8-bit machines.
