A network operating system, or NOS, is a specialized operating system built for a network device such as a router, switch, or firewall. Historically the term described any operating system with networking capability that let personal computers join computer networks and share files and printer access within a local area network, but that broader usage is now largely historical since common operating systems today include a network stack supporting a client server model as standard.
