Solaris is a Unix operating system originally developed by Sun Microsystems, first released in 1992 as the successor to Sun's earlier SunOS. Acquired by Oracle along with the rest of Sun in 2010, it became known for scalability on SPARC hardware and for originating features later widely copied elsewhere, including the DTrace dynamic tracing framework and the ZFS filesystem. Solaris remains a proprietary Oracle product for SPARC and x86-64 workstations and servers.
