Usenet, short for User's Network, is a worldwide distributed discussion system available on computers, developed from the Unix-to-Unix Copy dial-up network architecture. Conceived by Tom Truscott and Jim Ellis in 1979 and established in 1980, it lets users read and post threaded messages to topic categories called newsgroups, resembling a bulletin board system and serving as a precursor to the Internet forums that followed the World Wide Web.
