Whirlpool is a cryptographic hash function designed by Vincent Rijmen, a co-creator of the Advanced Encryption Standard, and Paulo S. L. M. Barreto, who first described it in 2000. It is named after the Whirlpool galaxy, the first galaxy recognized to have a spiral structure, identified by William Parsons, third Earl of Rosse, in 1845. The hash function has been recommended by the NESSIE project and adopted by the International Organization for Standardization and the International Electrotechnical Commission as part of the joint ISO/IEC 10118-3 international standard.
