Vincent Rijmen

Vincent Rijmen (born 16 October 1970) is a Belgian cryptographer and one of the two designers of Rijndael, the Advanced Encryption Standard. He is also the co-designer of the Whirlpool cryptographic hash function and the block ciphers Anubis, Khazad, Square, Noekeon and Shark. He obtained a degree in electronics engineering at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in 1993 and completed his doctoral dissertation there in 1997 on the cryptanalysis and design of iterated block ciphers. After collaborating with Joan Daemen on Rijndael, selected by the National Institute of Standards and Technology as the Advanced Encryption Standard in October 2000, he worked as chief cryptographer at Cryptomathic and held professorships at Graz University of Technology and, since 2007, at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, alongside an adjunct professorship at the Selmer Center at the University of Bergen since 2019. In 2019 he was named a Fellow of the International Association for Cryptologic Research, and in 2020 he received the RSA Award for Excellence in Mathematics jointly with Daemen.
