LFE, or Lisp Flavored Erlang, is a functional, concurrent, garbage-collected general-purpose programming language that layers a Lisp dialect on top of Core Erlang and the Erlang virtual machine, BEAM. Designed by Robert Virding and first appearing in 2008, LFE lets developers write the same distributed, fault-tolerant, soft-real-time applications Erlang is known for, while adding Lisp-style macros and metaprogramming along with an enhanced read-eval-print loop for interactive development. Its influences include Erlang itself, Common Lisp, Maclisp, Scheme, Elixir, Clojure and Hy, and LFE in turn influenced later languages such as Joxa. LFE's typing discipline is dynamic and strong, matching Erlang's own, and it is released under the Apache 2.0 license.
