Malbolge is an esoteric programming language created by Ben Olmstead in 1998, named after the eighth circle of Hell, Malebolge, in the poem Inferno by Dante Alighieri. Malbolge was specifically designed to be as difficult to program in as possible, employing a deliberately convoluted instruction-encryption scheme and self-modifying code, and it took roughly two years after its release before the first genuinely original Malbolge program was written, with earlier ones produced by automated search rather than direct human authorship.
