Datalog

Logic Language

Datalog is a declarative logic programming language that syntactically is a subset of Prolog. It is often used as a query language for deductive databases, and has been applied to problems in data integration, networking, program analysis, security and cloud computing. Datalog programs are sets of logical rules over relations, evaluated to a fixed point, and unlike general Prolog, Datalog queries on finite databases are guaranteed to terminate.

FAQs

What does a Datalog program look like?

A set of rules and facts; rules use :- and may refer to themselves.

A Datalog program is a set of rules and facts. The PLDB entry gives a small example that defines ancestor in terms of parent using two rules written with the :- symbol. One rule says X is an ancestor of Y when X is a parent of Y. The other says X is an ancestor of Y when X is a parent of some Z and Z is an ancestor of Y. The second rule refers to ancestor itself, which shows how Datalog expresses recursive relationships.

  • History
The origins of Datalog date back to the beginning of logic programming, but it became prominent as a separate area around 1977 when Hervé Gallaire and Jack Minker organized a workshop on logic and databases.

Datalog is a declarative logic programming language.
  • In Group: Prolog and Its Close Relatives, Lead
Datalog is a declarative logic programming language. While it is syntactically a subset of Prolog, Datalog generally uses a bottom-up rather than top-down evaluation model.
