Processing is a programming language and integrated development environment created in 2001 by Casey Reas and Ben Fry at the MIT Media Lab, with the nonprofit Processing Foundation established in 2012 together with Daniel Shiffman. It is built on top of Java and adds a simplified set of classes and functions along with a graphical development environment, aimed at teaching programming fundamentals to people without a programming background in a visual, arts oriented context. The project has been influential beyond its own use, contributing ideas that shaped later platforms such as Arduino and Wiring, and it received the Golden Nica from Ars Electronica in 2005. Processing is free and open source software, released under the GNU General Public License and Lesser General Public License.
