Haskell is a general-purpose, statically typed, purely functional programming language with type inference and lazy evaluation. It pioneered type classes for type-safe operator overloading and a monadic approach to input and output, and is named after logician Haskell Curry. Some computer scientists, including Simon Peyton Jones and Robert Harper, have argued lazy evaluation complicates reasoning about performance, making Haskell arguably unsuited to teaching introductory programming. 2
