Edgar Frank Codd, known as Ted, was a British computer scientist who, while working for IBM, invented the relational model for database management, the theoretical basis for relational databases. His 1970 paper A Relational Model of Data for Large Shared Data Banks reorganized how the world stores structured data, and he won the 1981 Turing Award for it.
