Larry Ellison (Lawrence Joseph Ellison, born 17 August 1944 in New York City) is an American businessman who co-founded the software company Oracle Corporation and was its chief executive from 1977 to 2014, remaining its chief technology officer and executive chairman. He left several universities without graduating and began work as a computer programmer in California. At Ampex his first project was a database for the CIA code-named Oracle, and he was inspired by Edgar F. Codd's paper on relational database systems. In 1977 he joined Software Development Laboratories, founded by his supervisor Bob Miner; the company became Relational Software in 1979 and released the first Oracle Database that year as Oracle version 2. Ellison wanted Oracle to be compatible with IBM's System R, which was also based on Codd's theories, but IBM refused to share its error codes.
