Peter Chen is a Taiwanese-American computer scientist and applied mathematician known for developing the entity relationship model in 1976, a way of describing the data an information system needs to track as entities, their attributes and the relationships between them. The entity relationship model became a foundation for database design methodology, computer aided software engineering tools and data modeling practice broadly, and entity relationship diagrams remain a standard way to plan a database before it is built.
