NetWare

NetWare was a network operating system that Novell built to manage file and print sharing across networked computers, first released in 1983 and updated for the last time as version 6.5 Service Pack 8 in May 2009. It worked at the level of individual files rather than whole disks, used aggressive caching and its own NetWare Core Protocol, and was designed as a non-preemptive system optimized for network services; it began on Novell's IPX protocol before later adding TCP/IP support. NetWare dominated the network operating system market from the mid-1980s through the mid-1990s, reaching a reported 53 percent market share in 1988 according to International Data Corporation, but Microsoft Windows NT steadily took market share from the late 1990s onward, a decline sharpened by NetWare's slow move away from IPX/SPX as the Internet grew around TCP/IP. Novell replaced NetWare with Open Enterprise Server in 2005, which could run its services on either a Linux or a NetWare kernel.
