Static Typing

Foundational Concept

Static typing is the form of type checking in which mismatches between the kinds of values a program uses are detected statically, at compile time, rather than at runtime. The cited article, titled Type system because the title Static typing redirects to it, explains that a type system is a set of rules that associates a data type with each term in a program and that its main purpose is to reduce the possibilities for bugs caused by mismatches in how values are interpreted in different parts of a program. It says the checking that connects parts of a program consistently can happen statically, dynamically, or as a combination of both, and that when a mismatch is detected it is called a type error. Languages the atlas records as statically typed are grouped under this entry.

Cobra neatly dodges this argument completely, by being both static and dynamic.
