Dynamic Typing

Foundational Concept

Dynamic typing is the form of type checking in which mismatches between the kinds of values a program uses are detected dynamically, at runtime, rather than at compile time. The cited article, titled Type system because the title Dynamic typing redirects to it, explains that type systems formalize and enforce the otherwise implicit categories a programmer uses for data, such as string, array of float or function returning boolean, and that the aim is to prevent operations expecting a certain kind of value from being applied to values for which the operation does not make sense. It says the checking can happen statically, dynamically, or as a combination of both. Languages the atlas records as dynamically typed are grouped under this entry.

Cobra neatly dodges this argument completely, by being both static and dynamic.

Ruby is interpreted, high-level, and dynamically typed; its interpreter uses garbage collection and just-in-time compilation.
